Mowing and herbicide applications are part an integrated roadside vegetation management system.
Roadside Mowing
Mowing is performed not just for aesthetic reasons. It is also necessary to maintain safe sight distances and prevent vegetation from obstructing traffic control devices, such as traffic signals and street signs. Roadside mowing is usually done on the same days as street sweeping. This allows for the cleanup of any grass clippings that may be deposited on the roadway by the mowers. Roadside mowing equipment includes 2016 John Deere 6110M with a Tiger flail head mower.
- Mondays: Chambers Hill Area (South of RT 322 and East of I 283).
- Tuesdays: Rutherford (North of RT 322 from N.61st St. to the Swatara Creek).
- Wednesdays: Lenker Manor and Lawnton (From Paxtang Borough to N. 61St St.).
- Thursdays: Oberlin (north of Highland St) Oberlin Gardens, 29th St. area.
- Fridays: Oberlin (south of Highland St), Enhaut, Bressler.
Herbicide Spraying
Herbicides are used to control vegetation in locations where mechanical controls (mowing) are not practical. Under guide rail and along curbs and fences are a few examples. The Township’s herbicide applicators are certified through the PA Dept. of Agriculture and operate under license #BU8641. Records of all spraying activities are maintained by the Highway Superintendent. All products are USDA approved and are applied according to the instructions on the product label.
